Starting college is a huge milestone. For many students, this is the first time they are on their own and away from home.

While college campuses strive to create a safe environment, they are not immune to crime. For this reason, incoming freshmen need to be aware and alert to potential safety issues. You can help your new college student to prepare by giving him or her some safety tips for campus life.

Stay Alert

Collegiate Parent suggests making your child aware of how important it is to pay attention to his or her surroundings. While cell phones can be great tools and do offer many safety apps, it is a good idea for your child to get into the habit of not walking around while using it. This often results in the person tuning out what is happening around him or her, which can lead to safety risks.

Avoid Alcohol

Most college freshmen are not old enough to legally drink, but parties are still common. You should talk about the dangers of alcohol and how it can lead to bad judgment.

Have a Buddy

It is always a good idea to follow the buddy system on campus. Your child should find a friend or a group of friends who he or she can always have around when walking the campus area. Being with at least one other person can help increase safety and avoid bad situations.

Safeguard Your Dorm Room

You should also explain to your child about dorm safety. Stress the importance of always locking the door, and explain why it is essential to follow all dorm rules.
